These Festive Crispy Stars and Stripes Pretzel Rods are crunchy, sweet, and coated with colorful red, white, and blue candy melts, perfect for patriotic celebrations and quick party treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • About 20 large pretzel rods (Snyder’s of Hanover recommended)
  • 12 ounces (340g) white candy melts (Wilton brand recommended)
  • 6 ounces (170g) red candy melts
  • 6 ounces (170g) blue candy melts
  • 1/2 cup red, white, and blue star-shaped sprinkles
  • Vegetable shortening or coconut oil: 1 tablespoon per 6 ounces of candy melts
  • Wax paper or parchment paper for cooling and setting

Instructions

  1. Line a large baking sheet with wax or parchment paper for drying the pretzel rods.
  2. Melt 12 ounces of white candy melts with 2 tablespoons of vegetable shortening (or coconut oil) in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth and glossy (about 2-3 minutes).
  3. Dip each pretzel rod about two-thirds of the way into the melted white candy, tap off excess, and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Sprinkle red, white, and blue star sprinkles generously over the wet white coating.
  5. Allow the white layer to set at room temperature for 15 minutes or refrigerate for 5-7 minutes.
  6. Melt 6 ounces of red candy melts with 1 tablespoon of shortening using the same microwave method.
  7. Drizzle thin red stripes across the white-coated pretzels using a spoon or small offset spatula, then let set for 10 minutes at room temperature or in the fridge.
  8. Melt 6 ounces of blue candy melts with 1 tablespoon of shortening.
  9. Drizzle blue stripes parallel to the red ones, alternating to mimic the flag pattern; add extra blue stars if desired.
  10. Allow all candy melts to harden completely for about 20 minutes at room temperature or quicker in the fridge.
  11. Carefully peel pretzels off the wax paper and arrange for serving or package for gifting.

Notes

Melt candy melts gently in 30-second bursts to avoid clumping. Dip pretzels firmly but avoid fingerprints on coating. Sprinkle stars immediately after dipping while coating is wet. Let each layer set properly for crisp, clean stripes. Reheat candy melts gently if thickening occurs. Avoid water contact with candy melts to prevent seizing.
