A bright, zesty cranberry sauce with fresh ginger and orange, perfect for holiday tables. This happy accident turned tradition is quick, easy, and bursting with flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries (about 3 cups)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (from about 1 large orange)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients first. Wash the cranberries and pick out any soft or bruised ones. Zest your orange before you juice it. Grate your ginger.
  2. Combine the sugar, orange juice, and water in a medium saucepan. Stir together. Turn the heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle boil, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Add the cranberries. Stir everything together. The cranberries will start to pop and soften.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Let the sauce simmer gently for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cranberries will break down and the sauce will thicken.
  5. Add the fresh ginger and orange zest during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Stir them in.
  6. Add the pinch of salt. Give it one final stir. Taste and adjust sweetness or ginger if desired.
  7. Remove from heat. Let the sauce cool in the saucepan for about 10 minutes. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
  8. Transfer to a serving bowl or storage container. For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender for a few seconds if desired.
  9. Cool completely before serving. The sauce can be served at room temperature or chilled. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving if possible.

Notes

Make this sauce a day ahead for best flavor. The sauce freezes well for up to 3 months. For a spiced version, add a cinnamon stick and 2 whole cloves while cooking. For a maple version, swap sugar for 3/4 cup pure maple syrup and reduce water to 2 tablespoons.
