A warm and inviting apple cider hot toddy bar setup perfect for cozy autumn nights, featuring spiced cider, whiskey, and customizable garnishes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 gallon (3.8 liters) apple cider (fresh or store-bought)
  • 750 ml bottle whiskey or bourbon
  • Honey (local, raw preferred, for drizzling)
  • Brown sugar (optional, up to 1/4 cup or 50 grams)
  • 68 cinnamon sticks
  • 1012 whole cloves
  • 23 star anise pods
  • 45 thin slices fresh ginger (optional)
  • Orange slices or twists
  • Lemon slices
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs
  • Vanilla extract (optional, a splash)
  • Apple slices (optional, for floating)
  • Club soda or sparkling water (optional, for lighter drinks)

Instructions

  1. Pour 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of apple cider into a slow cooker or large pot.
  2. Add 6-8 cinnamon sticks, 10 whole cloves, 2-3 star anise pods, and 4-5 thin slices of fresh ginger if using.
  3. Heat on low for 1-2 hours to let flavors meld gently, avoiding boiling.
  4. Taste the cider and stir in honey to taste (about 1/4 cup or 60 ml), and add brown sugar if desired, mixing until dissolved.
  5. Slice oranges and lemons into thin rounds or twists; rinse and dry rosemary sprigs.
  6. Place garnishes, extra cinnamon sticks, and star anise in small bowls for easy access.
  7. Arrange the slow cooker or pot centrally with mugs, stirrers, garnishes, and whiskey bottles nearby.
  8. Invite guests to ladle warm cider into mugs, add 1.5 oz (45 ml) whiskey per serving, and customize with garnishes.
  9. Encourage stirring with a cinnamon stick for aroma and flavor infusion.
  10. Keep the cider warm on low heat or with a beverage warmer throughout the gathering, replenishing garnishes as needed.

Notes

Keep the cider at a gentle simmer to preserve flavor and alcohol content. Warm mugs before serving to keep drinks hot longer. Prepare the spiced cider a day ahead for deeper flavor. Non-alcoholic version can be made by omitting whiskey and adding extra spices and vanilla extract.
