These Cozy Brown Butter Apple Crisp Bars combine the rich, nutty flavor of brown butter with tender apples and a crisp crumb topping, perfect for a comforting autumn treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 3 medium apples, Granny Smith preferred)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, browned
  • 1 ¾ cups (220 grams) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150 grams) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100 grams) packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop about 4 cups (3 medium) apples into bite-sized pieces. Toss with 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice to prevent browning. Set aside. (Approx. 10 minutes)
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter. Stir frequently as it melts and foams. Watch for a golden-brown color and nutty aroma, about 5–7 minutes. Remove from heat immediately. (Approx. 7 minutes)
  3. In a large bowl, combine 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, ¾ cup granulated sugar, ½ cup packed brown sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, and ½ teaspoon salt. Pour in warm brown butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Stir until crumbly and combined. (Approx. 5 minutes)
  4. Press half of the crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of a greased 9×13 inch baking pan to form an even layer. Spread the lemon-tossed apples evenly over the base. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture evenly over the apples. (Approx. 10 minutes)
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake bars for 35–40 minutes or until top is golden and apples are tender when pierced with a fork. (Approx. 40 minutes)
  6. Let bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into squares. (Approx. 30 minutes)

Notes

Use a light-colored pan to brown butter to better monitor color changes. Press the bottom crumb layer firmly for bar stability. Let bars cool completely before slicing to prevent them from falling apart. Fresh apples are preferred for best texture. For gluten-free, substitute flour with a gluten-free blend. For dairy-free, use vegan butter and plant-based milk substitutes.
