This spinach artichoke football dip bread bowl is the ultimate game-day centerpiece. A creamy, cheesy dip is baked inside a hollowed-out sourdough loaf shaped like a football, creating an all-in-one serving that’s perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (about 1.5 pounds)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
  • 1 can (14 ounces) artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (for butter)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Thaw the frozen spinach completely. Place it in a clean kitchen towel and wring out as much water as possible.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Mix until smooth.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  5. Fold in the drained spinach, chopped artichoke hearts, shredded mozzarella, and grated Parmesan until well combined.
  6. Using a sharp serrated knife, cut a thin slice off the top of the sourdough loaf. Set the top aside. Carefully cut around the inside edge of the bread, leaving about a 1-inch thick wall. Scoop out the soft inner bread, creating a hollow bowl. Reserve the scooped-out bread pieces for dipping.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with the remaining minced garlic. Brush the inside of the bread bowl and the cut side of the top with the garlic butter.
  8. Spoon the spinach artichoke dip into the hollowed-out bread bowl, mounding it slightly on top. Place the filled bread bowl on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 20 minutes. Then, place the garlic-buttered bread top and the reserved bread pieces on the baking sheet around the bowl. Bake for another 10-15 minutes, until the dip is hot and bubbly and the bread pieces are golden and crispy.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

Don’t skip draining the spinach; wet spinach makes the dip watery. Use room temperature cream cheese for smooth mixing. For extra-crispy dippers, toss reserved bread pieces with olive oil and salt and bake separately. If the bread bowl browns too quickly, tent with foil. Let the dip rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow it to set.
